What is Black Friday?

Originating in Philadelphia, United States, the Black Friday we know today was coined as a term to describe the extreme amount of people and vehicles that filled the streets after Thanksgiving Day, which is always celebrated on the last Thursday of November. Popularised in the 1960s, it was not until well into the 1970s that it spread to the rest of the country.

This expression was later moulded, coming to refer to the extraordinary income that the crowd of people produced in local businesses, which went from being in the "red" to making huge profits (in black).

This became a tradition in the United States, with spectacular discounts at most national businesses in preparation for the holiday season. In recent decades, Black Friday events have become an international trend, and particularly in Spain, where it began to be applied in different pioneering e-commerce at the beginning of the 2010s, extending to traditional businesses later on and going from a one-off offer to a massive event that lasts for several days.
